Where’s the Food? The Fear of Uncertainty

Times are really getting tough I used to watch other people as they lost their income. Some of my friends owned businesses and they had a decrease in profit. The end result for them was that they had to lay off people and productivity of the company decreased along with their income. Other friends had reduction in hours and/or pay decreases. Sales are slower, Homes are being lost. People are right now suffering from financial problems that will only get worse. Then my life and many of my family member’s lives were turned upside down. Thankfully, with a

If you do not now have a surplus of food storage for your family. I beg you get one. Even if you buy only one extra item with you groceries each week. I cannot think of anything worse than watching your very own beautiful children cry because they are hungry. I also cannot think of anything better than sitting at the dinner table visiting with your happy family sharing food.

“Where’s the Food? The Fear of Uncertainty

Sep 2nd, 2010 | By Andrew | Category: Food, Shortages

As the economy continues to sink deeper, forcing more people into unemployment lines, uncertainty is driving otherwise clear thinking people into a horde mentality that poses a growing danger to society. A recent episode in Tulsa involving a federally subsidized food distribution program is illustrative of the new reality of this uncertainty as increasing numbers of people begin to wonder where their next meal will come from.
Iron Gate, a church-sponsored food distribution program, and recipient of federal stimulus dollars, provides food boxes to eligible low income families. Typically these boxes, containing about 30 pounds of food, are distributed monthly for free to about 165 families who qualify based on their income and dependent status.

It didn’t take long for some bits of erroneous information to spread through viral emails and social media before the hordes converged upon the church to receive their share of free food. At the unexpected sight of 2000 people lining up one morning, the alarmed staff of Iron Gate had no choice but to suspend the food box distribution.

If you have ever witnessed the scene of a promotion van pulling up at a local fair and then throwing out samples of food, you may have been shocked at the sight of healthy, stampeding people to get their free bag. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine the ugly scene of a crowd of adults, stoked with the fear of uncertainty, as they jostle for position in a line for free food boxes.

It was a frightening situation heightened by a misinformed crowd jammed together in the hot Tulsa sun expecting something for free. The same scene is likely to be repeated in many other towns and cities as local food banks are reporting a 40 to 50% increase in traffic largely from first time recipients.

As these types of federal and state subsidized free food distribution programs continue to expand, the growing throngs of economically displaced people, fearing an uncertain future, will likely become increasingly panicked at the thought of empty pantries.

The societal danger is that as the crisis worsens, demand for food assistance will grow exponentially, both because of the food shortage and rising prices. As the economic uncertainty continues to spread the entitlement mentality will creep among those who are marginally affected by financial circumstances. Observers of the Iron Gate incident noted that the line of 2000 was comprised of a broad cross section of the economic strata that included many people without immediate need for assistance.

The bigger threat is that as a liberal-minded government continues to expand the supply of free food, it will actually aggravate the problem, by creating a growing dependency class and consuming an ever-larger portion of the market for food. It has the potential of becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy which can only exacerbate the problem.

A family in economic distress can be pushed over the edge when there is fear as to the source of their next meal. While this may be a way of existence for hundreds of millions around the world, American families haven’t faced that kind of uncertainty since the 1930s. As more families join the ranks of the economically distressed, their collective fear could strain the tolerances of society and the ability for the government to provide for them. It is a frightening situation.”

Medical care when no doctor is available

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

I received this email and thought this is quite a wake up call and I should share it. We all need to be prepared for any emergency that a family member may need to have medical care when none is available. What would you do?

Dear Emma,

Astronomers from around the world are warning that a massive solar storm with the equivalent force of 100 million hydrogen bombs is likely to strike the earth in 2012, and while the media is focused on the likely damage to the global electric grid, medical professionals and consumers alike are beginning to contemplate what an off-grid scenario would mean for medical care.
Analysts are concerned that if the damage is as extensive as leading experts say it may be, medical care could be set back a century or more. Insiders point to the difficulty maintaining perishable or refrigerated medicines, proper sanitation of medical equipment and facilities and even basics like keeping the lights on in buildings that have largely been constructed with little consideration for natural light.

Some skeptics have pointed out that many medical facilities have robust back-up generators, but as Brian Brawdy, a journalist and survivalist says, fuel supplies will eventually run out and may not be replenished.

“The medical industry has undertaken great efforts to continue to provide high quality medical care even under extraordinary off-grid type situations, but if the grid itself has collapsed because of damage to transformers, then simple things we are all dependent on-like regular fuel deliveries-will be a thing of the past, rendering diesel generators useless.”

Although a journalist by profession, Mr. Brawdy’s passion is for adventure and off-grid living. He has traveled in a truck that has been converted to part RV, part studio, and spends much of his time investigating how modern society is likely to respond to a crisis situation. The future of medical care in America is one of his greatest concerns.

“We are a resilient people and I’m impressed by the huge numbers of people who see the writing on the wall and are preparing for life after electricity by working towards personal energy and food independence, but one of the most neglected areas is health care, because people who are healthy don’t want to think about illness and those who are already suffering from a chronic condition can’t imagine life without modern medicine. Addressing this issue and finding solutions is one of my passions.”

While Mr. Brawdy’s preeminent concern is the much talked about series of solar storms predicted by NASA for 2012, other emergency preparedness experts see threats in more worldly forms. Natural disasters can devastate entire regions, be they hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, blizzards or earthquakes. The devastation in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina demonstrates just how quickly a functioning, modern city can become a toxic wasteland, leaving residents not only without food, water and electricity, but without access to even the most basic medical care.

Similarly, a terrorist attack on a major city would not only cripple the area’s infrastructure but would likely impact medical personnel and facilities disproportionately as victims overwhelm emergency care facilities.

Still others fear the impact ObamaCare will have on the quality and availability of health care in the United States. Beyond the expected deterioration in care and rationing, the willingness of the Obama administration to categorize Christian patriots as domestic terrorists has led many to conclude that ideological purity may one day become a prerequisite for medical care. Critics of President Obama’s policies point out that despite the frequent charge of socialism, his policies are actually more fascist in nature and that fascist systems have historically been eager to punish political opponents by withholding public services.

All these potential risks have led to a boom in alternative health care, particularly private, independent treatment. One of the world’s leading experts in the field of natural therapies is Master Herbalist Debra St. Claire, an international teacher and lecturer who has formulated over 270 products for treating common ailments and even serious, chronic conditions.

Mr. Brawdy, the journalist from New Orleans, is one of thousands of Americans who have contacted Ms. St. Claire looking for help developing natural remedies in the event no Doctor is available. As a result, she has developed a home study course called, “Herbal Preparations and Natural Therapies — Creating and Using a Home Herbal Medicine Chest”, available on three DVDs designed to teach anyone, even a young person, how to gather, prepare, administer and preserve the most valuable herbal remedies.

Over the course of four hours, Ms. St. Claire demonstrates through detailed, yet simple methods, how to make virtually every type of herbal preparation imaginable in the privacy and comfort of your own home. She explains how to make everything from ointments, extracts, tinctures, powders, even bug repellant!

One consumer reporter reviewed the material and said it was more like a Discovery Channel documentary than a training course, and that he believed he knew more about herbal remedies than 99% of all doctors in the country, and given the medical establishment and BigPharma’s antipathy towards natural remedies, it’s not likely that doctors will be prepared to adopt natural, alternative therapies during a time of crisis.

Ms. St. Claire says that normally her home study course is sold for $299 but that the severity of the circumstances we find ourselves in have led her to cut the price in half, and that the home study course is available for only $149, at least until they are all sold.

Mr. Brawdy believes that after securing food and shelter, most people should begin preparing for a more physically demanding life, and one without the medical care we’ve come to expect. “Whether from a terrorist attack, natural disaster, societal collapse or grid failure, millions of Americans will suffer horribly from a lack of modern medical care. Even simple, common ailments can become life-threatening without proper treatment, and mortality rates could skyrocket. Part of prepping for an uncertain future must include preparations for medical care when no doctor is available”.

“FEMA Administrator Fugate Kicks Off National Preparedness Month
As Hurricane Earl Approaches East Coast, Seventh annual National Preparedness Month encourages Americans to take steps to prepare.
Release Date: September 1, 2010
Release Number: HQ-10-167

WASHINGTON – Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate today kicked off the seventh annual National Preparedness Month, joining local Washington, D.C. officials and students from Ferebree-Hope Elementary School at the Serve DC Commander Ready event to talk about the importance of family and community emergency preparedness, especially as Hurricane Earl approaches the East Coast of the U.S. and other storms continue to form in the Atlantic Ocean.

“Hurricane Earl is another important reminder to all of us that every member of the community needs to be prepared for hurricanes and other disasters. Engaging with children on the topic of emergency preparedness is an effective way to bring home the preparedness message,” said Fugate. “Local events like this one are happening all over the country throughout September to underscore the importance of getting people of all ages involved in preparing for emergencies.”

National Preparedness Month is led by FEMA’s Ready Campaign in partnership with Citizen Corps and The Advertising Council, and is a nationwide effort encouraging individuals, families, businesses and communities to work together and take action to prepare for emergencies. National Preparedness Month is supported by a coalition of public, private and non-profit organizations that help spread the preparedness message. This year’s record number of coalition members are sharing preparedness information with their members, customers, employee, and communities. Members also spearhead activities that encourage specific steps for individual, neighborhood, and community preparedness.

In addition to the kickoff event, the Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps will sponsor activities across the country throughout September. Ready is introducing several new PSA campaigns and Citizen Corps is presenting its National Achievement Awards during September.
